An Tale of Surprising Generosity: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground

Back in 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for a medical school interview. My plan was I would book a place to stay upon arrival, but upon reaching the city, a big convention was happening and every single budget hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.

Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I thought perhaps I could just sleep at the terminal – but soon learned that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open all night. Unsure of what my next move should be and growing worried, I boarded a city-bound bus and began walking in the direction of the casino, believing I could pass the evening somewhere that was open through the night. This was not ideal at my peak for nailing the admissions interview the following day, however, being a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

Our society requires more people who show such kindness.

It seems I seemed lost as a female student spotted me walking aimlessly through the city center and inquired if I was OK. I explained the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she offered I was welcome to sleep on the floor at her university residence at the local university – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where my interview was scheduled for the next day. She even offered a meal: one filled rolls she had taken home her part-time job. I had access to warm shower facilities and a protected spot to rest to sleep.

In retrospect, I now understand what a big chance she undertook being a woman inviting a male stranger she had only just encountered stay in her room. In those days I was in a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious about things like that. Today, as a parent, I am astonished she took that chance – but still very grateful.

I didn’t end up study at the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of human compassion. It is my wish life has repaid her act of kindness tenfold. Our society requires more individuals who show such kindness.
