Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Charity
Getting rid of unwanted presents could be considered slightly impolite – unless it's done in the proper manner.
A Charitable Auction
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 presents received by her by world leaders during her travels. The eclectic collection is said to contain objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.
These items, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. The plan is to put up for sale to the highest bidder by a Rome-based auction firm. A date has not been finalized, although the aim is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with all funds raised donated to a selection of charitable causes.
Storage Room Treasures
The presents reportedly stored in a secure area on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore planning to auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust for years.
The full gift list is yet to be made public, but a glimpse were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was reviewed by officials. The query focused on if a legal value limit was being respected. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.
A Global Array of Presents
Among the items:
- A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
- A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
- A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
- Paintings from Moldova.
- An assortment including cosmetics, a skateboard, and several rugs from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the oddest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.
Political Backdrop
The prime minister has received praise, mainly from her allies, with winning over global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.
This unique auction symbolizes a novel approach to manage the protocol gifts that are collected during a leader's tenure.
